Beating a dead horse

You know when someone suggests that maybe instead of doing this thing we should instead be doing that thing.

Of course they are right, that thing is definitely the better thing to. However it has already been proven that thing is impossible to achieve.

Instead of awkwardly explaining why we must begrudgingly accept the status quo, I simply say 'horses'.
